What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes means your blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetes. Think of it as a warning light on your dashboard — your body is telling you something needs attention.

At this stage, your body is becoming resistant to insulin (the hormone that moves glucose into cells for energy). Your pancreas is working overtime to produce extra insulin, but it's struggling to keep up. Without intervention, prediabetes often progresses to Type 2 Diabetes.

Your Window of Opportunity

Prediabetes is reversible. This is your chance to make changes before Type 2 Diabetes develops. Studies show that lifestyle intervention at this stage can reduce your risk of developing diabetes by up to 58% — more effective than medication alone.

Diagnosis & Testing

Prediabetes is diagnosed through simple blood tests. Most people have no symptoms, which is why screening is so important if you have risk factors.

Test Normal Prediabetes Diabetes
HbA1c Below 5.7% 5.7% – 6.4% 6.5% or higher
Fasting Glucose Below 5.5 mmol/L 5.5 – 6.9 mmol/L 7.0 mmol/L or higher
OGTT (2hr) Below 7.8 mmol/L 7.8 – 11.0 mmol/L 11.1 mmol/L or higher

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) is often the most convenient test as it doesn't require fasting and gives a picture of your average blood glucose over the past 2-3 months.

Who Should Be Tested?
  • Everyone over 40 years old (yearly screening)
  • Anyone with risk factors (regardless of age)
  • Women with history of gestational diabetes
  • People with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)

Risk Factors

Prediabetes risk factors are similar to Type 2 Diabetes. The more risk factors you have, the more important it is to get tested and take action.

Key Risk Factors
  • Overweight or obesity — especially abdominal fat (waist >94cm men, >80cm women)
  • Family history of Type 2 Diabetes (parent or sibling)
  • Physical inactivity — sedentary lifestyle
  • Age 45+ — risk increases with age
  • Ethnicity — higher risk in Aboriginal, Asian, Pacific Islander backgrounds
  • History of gestational diabetes or having a baby over 4.5kg

Why Prediabetes Matters

Prediabetes isn't just a "pre" condition — it's a serious health state that requires attention. Without intervention, the majority of people with prediabetes will develop Type 2 Diabetes within 10 years.

Damage May Already Be Starting

Research shows that cardiovascular damage and other complications can begin in the prediabetes stage. People with prediabetes have a 50% higher risk of heart disease and stroke compared to those with normal blood glucose.

Risks of Untreated Prediabetes
  • Progression to Type 2 Diabetes (5-10% per year without intervention)
  • Increased cardiovascular disease risk (heart attack, stroke)
  • Early kidney changes
  • Higher risk of certain cancers

Prevention & Reversal

Here's the empowering truth: prediabetes can be reversed. Landmark studies (like the Diabetes Prevention Program) have shown that lifestyle changes are remarkably effective at preventing progression to diabetes — even more effective than medication.

The Evidence is Clear

Lifestyle intervention reduces diabetes risk by 58%. In people over 60, the reduction is even higher — up to 71%. These are better results than any medication can achieve.

  • Regular physical activity: 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise
  • Healthy eating: Focus on whole foods, reduce refined carbs and sugary drinks
  • Regular monitoring: Check HbA1c every 3-6 months to track progress
